CIH Herekino has refurbished their committee, and formed another not-for-profit committee, 2020 Far North ICT Trust. This Trust stemmed from the successsful CIH Project, based in Herekino. Trust members are made up from the business sector, education, and of course our 2020 National Trust. More from this Trust will be posted onto another blog, at a later date

Rejuvenation 54 2009

Rejuvenation 54 2009 is upon us. Graduates computers, from the CIH Herekino Project . Fourty computers needed servicing, one computer was a D.O.A. totally. Ten happy participants thought their computers were behaving nicely and didnt think it needed checking. A phone survey was conducted for participants who preferred their survey that way, otherwise Rejuvenation Survey Forms were delivered via post to participants who were keen to participate.
Mahi that was completed on the participants computers included: a new keyboard: a new monitor: new hard drives: 3 new machines: reloading of operating systems and drivers: cleaning of disks, and defragmenting: extra ram: dead power supply:, and the odd virus clean-up.
All-up, Forty rejuvenation forms and WOFs were completed and returned, - well done whanau, for your continued support during the rejuvenation period, and thankyou for giving learning another chance. Kia kaha tou mahi rorohiko

Wow! Far North Computers In Homes have completed their first EVALUATION - YEEHAA.....
We surveyed our first group (of 17), by way of questions directed at the content, delivery, hardware and how and where the students benefitted. We received 13 positive responses . A tonne of usage by this group of eager learners, as this was reflected in the usage reports given by WatchDog. 2 students continue to use WatchDog as their Internet provider, whereas "Broadband" had grabbed a little number of participants as well, with just a few sticking with Dial-up, largely because of the unavailability of Broadband in "the wops". Confusion set in when passwords and usernames were jumbled because of the familiarities with surnames, this caused a lot of laughter at first, until it started to eat into their 'free internet' time. All computers were checked upon the students graduating, with minor problems like the odd keyboard, mice and fans, being the faulty parts that crept cropping up, days after graduating, nevertheless, The Ark replaced/repaired these bits, although one participants computer went back and forth to The Ark 3 times,and the student wasn't a happy camper, and didn't want to even look at his computer, although he enjoyed the comraderie of the classroom. Viruses entered systems - because Parents/Caregivers failed to monitor the use by tamariki, mokopuna, after signing agreement forms which were included in their Parent Packs. All in all a lot of side-by-side learning from this first group with positive outcomes. The Students enjoyed their time in and out of the classroom, being more confident and knowing information they want and need is only a click away. By being brave and taking this leap into education and using Computers In Homes as a stepping stone to broaden their knowledge, the students are more willing to learn and acceptable to challenges that lay ahead , but they can also learn alongside their whanau. e-Day in theFar North happenedon 4th October 2008, !What a blast", and sooomany computers
and other ICT ANTIQUES, we were fortunate to catch a glimpse of an old model (probablythe first machines on the market) Commodore 64, bak in the day calculators, even cash registers, stuff before even i was thought of but all the more interesting. Louis, Brad, Chris, Janine, Agnes and mwah, handled the day effortlessly, of course with the Site coordinating by Ursula from Cleanstream Kaitaia . The local people in surrounding areas of Kaitaia were fantastic customers, obliging to questionaires and information on e-Day, now they want to get rid of T.V.s, radios and the like. An excelllent and long day had by all, and a great big thank you to Kaitaia CleanStream for the use of their awesome facilities, and the surrounding communities/schools for their support in the safe removal of toxic e-waste from our landfills. Next year promises to be bigger and better, so we will see you all in Kaitaia for ewaste on e-Day 2009, hopefully the word has got around and we"ll see more volunteers. At the end of the day Kaitaia Far North managed to reap in approxiamately 6 tonnes of e-waste from 103 vehicles on a cool-blustery sunny Far North day

eDay has arrived in the Far North, where Kaitaia and Kaikohe refuse centres will be the official e-day sites for October 4th 2008. e-waste is the fastest growing type of waste, and is more toxic than household rubbish. Some members of the newly formed 20/20 Far North ICT Trust will be in attendance at the Kaitaia Recycling Centre sorting and helping customers who bring along their old computers, mobile phones for another life as a recycled and reuseable piece of equipment or safer disposal of the hazardous parts of the computer.

GRADUATION 2nd time around

WHOOPEEE!!. Thank you Computers In Homes Participants in Herekino, Whangape, Manukau, Broadwood, Diggers Valley, Pawarenga, Panguru, Mitimiti. You have all done yourselves proud, by attending, the classes, and putting yourself up against the COMPUTER. Classes were held on a Wednesday afternoon and evening, and also on Thursday morning and afternoon. The classes were fun, the students interacted with each other, they learnt off each other as well as what they were taught from the tutors. Personally i thoroughly enjoyed the digital lesson, where I downloaded photos I had taken of the participants onto one of the participants computers, showed her how to put it onto her nano(flashdrive), then she in turn showed another classmate, they were rapt( so was I, for remembering how to do it) and so on until they had all had a turn and the photos were on their flashdrives. That is practical learning, and showing them NOT DOING it FOR THEM, is a far better way for the participants to"CLICK" . After an interesting 10 full-on weeks of learning the basics, and tripping over the basics, the participants graduated, with "flying" colours, and were presented with their well-deserved computer, a certificate, and a bag containing their Parent Pack- along with other computer goodies.Kelvin Davis, prospective MP for Labour, John Carter (and wife) MP for National, Colin Hogg, representative for the Mayor, all attended and expressed to the audience how important it is to keep and be in touch with family and friends via the computer, so even playing "SOLITAIRE" will definitely upgrade your skills, giving you those motor-skills we all need. The participants who were the V.I.P'S of the night, were very very shy, but humbled and excited and ecstatic all rolled into one on the grad night. Doug Greaves, (who first got Janine, Denise into going to Wellington), was also an invited guest, commented on what an "achievement" he has seen tonight and that most of the graduates were his relations. It has been a valuable and excellent learning experience for the graduates we have helped, to become computer game, and not scared any more of pushing the delete button. So, on behalf of the project Co-ordinators and all personnel connected to Computers In Homes Herekino, THANK YOU to all the above communities for getting behind your children-mokopuna and slowly closing the digital-divide, that affects so many families across the globe. We have achieved our roll-out of 50 (fifty) Computers In Homes families, thanks to the many people who want to become learners along with their whanau. TENA KOUTOU, TENA KOUTOU, TENA KOUTOU KATOA.

Well, we have successfully held our first Computers In Homes Graduation, for the first intake of 17 participants, at Far North Reap, on April 18 2008. Guests included DIA Reps from Kaitaia,as well as OUR Di, Laurence Zwimpfer, via skype, in Le Paris, a Rep from the Far North Mayor camp, Dennis Bowman, Herekino Rep on the Far North Community Board, Local MP's, Whanau, friends, Far North Reap Reps, Te Roopu Whai Pukenga members and of course the Famous 17. Laurence visited us via Paris to congratulate the Grad group and korero to the visitors about Computers In Homes. An excelent night was had by all, especialy the GROUP, as they were the lucky ones to get the goodies. We are now gearing up for our next intake of students, and definitely looking forward to our next Grad and the MAHI that goes with it.

Herekino Computers In Homes Launch, February 5th 2008

Hooray!!! Computers in Homes has arrived again in the Far North. Te Roopu Whai Pukenga, Herekino were proud achievers to finally relax the shoulders a bit. The day began very hot and into the early evening the setting sun on the West was a tad bit hotter. We were honoured to have local Kuia Hinerakei Murray, bless our new project, which included the newly refurbished Computers In Homes suite. After a short but very meaningful ceremony Locals, respective partners Far North Reap, Te Roopu Whai Pukenga Herekino CIH Students ,Teachers from the School and our younger generation gathered around for Karakia mo te Kai. A delicious meal was shared by the attendants, while time was quickly and silently grabbing pace, the students present for the 1st evening class were familiarising themselves with their new surroundings, that would be their Home away from Home base for the duration of the course. Herekino has 50 computers to give to families, while the first class student numbers are an eager 17 locals ages ranging from medium rare to cooked. Tuesday and Thursday seem to be the Buzz days where you'll more than likely see them there, with the extra classes for those who are reaLLY HooKED. Our next big THRILL is our 'GRADUATION' keep an eye out .....and definitely watch this space.
